Wild yam has been used for a long time and is known as an anti-aging remedy. For a long time, Mexican women have used wild yam as a contraceptive, as well as for the threat of miscarriage. Wild yam steroid saponins, called "hormone precursors", are the starting material for the synthesis of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone - the ancestor of testosterone) and pregnenalone, which regulate the balance of hormones in the female body, help to gain energy and well-being.

According to experts, starting from 20-25 years. the level of prohormones in the human body decreases. Studies have shown a relationship between falling prohormone levels and phenomena such as lethargy, sleepiness, obesity, and even diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis. It turned out that in sick people, regardless of age, the content of DHEA in the blood is lower than in healthy people.

Eating foods containing phytoestrogens has also been shown to markedly reduce the risk of diseases such as breast and pancreatic cancer. Phytoprogestins contained in Dioscorea are not hormones, but they can have a beneficial effect on the hormonal status of the female body: they regulate the menstrual cycle, maintain the tone of the female genital organs, especially during menopause, and serve to prevent osteoporosis.

Wild yam (dioscorea) is promising as one of the most effective and safest contraceptives, which, moreover, prevents female cancers.

Wild yam is effective as a sedative and muscle relaxant, has an analgesic effect, reduces headaches, tinnitus, fatigue, irritability, improves mood, sleep, memory, and gives "shine" to the eyes. It has antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic action, lowers blood cholesterol and lipid deposition in arterial vessels and liver.
